Chihuahua Rescue Archives

My friend is looking for a chihuahua, but she's not loaded, so she would like to find one for under bucks. Preferably FREE. I still find it surprising that they SELL living things, but hey, that's greed for ya... anyway, she wants one from either a good breeder or a rescue that has no health problems apparent and has not been bred to be viscious. It must be 2-3 pounds by 10 weeks, or it will have health problems, keep that in mind. She lives in maryland, so it has to be in MD, VA, PA or as a last resort, WV. Can anyone direct me to such a place? Coloring does not matter, size (except for weight, as i said before) does not matter. Preferably long-haired female, but long-haired male is ok. Thanks!
I know, I know. I told her she should get a cat :) but she's stubborn, and I thought i'd ask.
and yes, i'm a believer that selling anything living is wrong. even if people think they're stupid, they will get love even if you don't have to pay for it. and don't pull the 'animal abuse' trick on me, cuz that makes me cry, and anyway, humans are abused just as much and the only commercials you see are about starving children. at least some starving pets are HAPPY.

I have found 3 different cross breeds for adoption in my local dog rescue home. Which would be best. Yorkshire terrier cross chihuahua, pomeranian cross Jack Russell. I want a small dog which dousnt bark to much or is easy to train not to bark and which will get on with my two other bigger dogs (Keeshond and Staffordshire bull terrier).
Thanks :) x

My mom thinks of rats as the giant, red eyed, sewer monsters that they are portrayed as on TV. My brother and his girlfriend have a pet rat, that she has never seen, and I fell in love with him. I had to give my dog to my grandma when my mom remarried because her new husband didn't like her, he thought she was too spoiled and that dogs aren't supposed to be in the house, even if they are tiny pom/chihuahua mixes and would have to battle mutant sized raccoons. I want a pet, something I can hang out with, take care of, and love. I've gotten kind of lonely since my brother moved out, I only have a temperamental 8 year old sister that wants nothing to do with me. I have done a lot of research on pet rats and how to take care of them, prices on supplies, about 140$, and found a rat rescue in my town that offers 10$ adoptions. I'm a 15 year old girl, old enough, and responsible enough to take care of a pet. I always took good care of my dog, cleaning up after her, grooming her, and feeding her. My mom wouldn’t even have to see the rat, expect for the occasional visit to the vet. I have 70$, enough to pay for half of the supplies. What are some ways I can try to convince her I am responsible enough, and that rats aren’t the nasty little creatures that they are represented as?
I've been mentioning to my mom that I love my brother's pet rat and would love to have one, but I haven't actually asked about it.
And any info you could supply will be very helpful.
I understand, I don't think you're being mean at all. I was planning on getting two.

Would two males be ok in a cage together? Or should I get two females.
So I barely bring up the topic and my mom yells at me. She wouldn't even listen to me and laughed when I brought up the subject of having to get rid of my dog. She doesn't seem to comprehend how much it breaks my heart to only get to see my dog once or twice a month at most, and then to have her look at me with her big eyes and have to leave her again. I just want something to love, I'd be happy with just about anything, but rats seem best for my lifestyle.

I'm will ask my vet about this when I call too, curious as to what others' experience is.

*5 lb. Chihuahua foster dog
*rescued from large shelter
*4 years old
*female (spayed of course)
*previous history unknown (was found with a tag that said "For Barbara's 50th Birthday -- guess Barbara didn't like the gft)

She does the sneezy, snorty thing alot, like many many times a day. Most prominent in the morning.

The rescue's vet said it was "reverse sneezing" I call it "inverted sneezing" (Shih Tzus do it also)

From my experience with Shih Tzus, I learned how to stop a sneezing "fit" with my fingers on the nostrils. I haven't tried that with this one because the sneezing doesn't last very long, short bursts but very frequent.

If you've dealt with this before and know of a cause, prevention or cure", please let me know.

I hope I've got the term right -- if not, gitemgang will let me know big time =D
gtx_guitar_man, that is a good link, thank you.
kassy, yes she does lick her paws -- good thinking. We have a vet appt today, I will mention it to the vet. Thank you, I wouldn't have thought of mentioning this had you not answered.
hmmmm....I'll try to remember to ask my vet if there is a link between reverse sneezing and the rabies vax. I don't see a correlation, but then again I'm not a vet.

If anything, I would think the intranasal Bordetella vax could contribute to this condition (I always request the intramuscular Bordetella vax for short-muzzled fosters)

Funny story about how it took a whole town to catch a feisty little chihuahua. This is the last paragraph of the story.

Elusive Chihuahua captured near Ore. prison 9/27/2007, p.m.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — It took a prison employee to capture an escaped Chihuahua.
He donned two pairs of leather gloves and grabbed the dog.

"It was a battle," he said. "It was hissing and growling."

But the Chihuahua wasn't ready to surrender.

Hildebrand took the dog until another rescue worker could transport her back to Idaho. She placed her within a six-foot chain link fence and reinforced the gaps to prevent an escape.

It didn't quite work. Hildebrand and her husband, Gary, left home for awhile. When Gary got back he noticed the dog running free on the couple's five acres. He called his wife.

"He said, 'The Chihuahua is loose,'" Hildebrand said.

She raced home to find her husband in hot pursuit. The dog aimed her body toward an outside fence and started digging."The dirt was flying," Hildebrand said.

Just as the dog was squirming through the opening, Hildebrand dove.

"I hung onto her legs, yelled to Gary to bring the crate and just laid there with both me and the dog gasping for breath," Hildebrand said.

My mother in law recently passed away and left her dogs with us. We already have 2 dogs and 4 kids. It's just more than I can handle.
I've put ads in the papers and called several animal rescue services (they all say that they are Full). The dogs are great! Monkey is male Chihuahua100%, he's about a year old.
Mary Jane is 50 % Chihuahua and 50% Daschund, about 18 months old. Both are great with kids and house trained.
Any ideas on how we can find them good homes would be appreciated. We are in the Atlanta Area if anyone is interested in either dog.

can anyone tell me any sites i can check out so that i can find an adoptable chihuahua..ive looked all over petfinder and check for rescue and adoption sites plzzz help

I just rescued another dog a few days ago, she is an aussie mix, 2 years old.

Her previous owner couldn't keep her where she lived and had to give her up, and couldn't find a home for her, and didn't want to take her to the pound, so I took her in, I had them meet me at my boyfriend's house since it was a closer drive for the people to bring her.

And I like this dog a lot, I've only had her for 4 days now, but the only thing is she is extremely aggressive towards other animals.

I was told she was good with other non-aggressive dogs, and was total sweetheart.

Well first day we got her she attacked my boyfriend's dog, I know I wasn't to supposed to jump in but I did, Sadie kept chasing Charlie around the house, at first it seemed like they were just playing around, and things seemed fine until Sadie jumped on Charlie and started attacking him, they were both fighting pretty bad, I immediately grabbed Sadie's collar and pulled her off, but then my boyfriends dog didn't have a collar on so no one could grab him and he came back around and jumped back at her causing her collar to leave my hands, then she went after him again and was on top of him, my boyfriend's mom was screaming "Stop it!" and that's when I jumped in and I wrestled her off of him, but then Charlie came back around again and jumped at her, and she leaped up and jumped back at him and accidentally bit and punctured my right arm about 8 times, I got up and grabbed her trying to pull her off because she was just going at him, and there were no objects that we could distract them with, this happened in my boyfriend's house, in his small living room, Sadie had a strong grip on Charlie's neck, finally I managed to get her off of him, and I flew back with her into the fireplace, I broke her fall but hurt my back and leg, then Finally my boyfriend's mom grabbed her dog and took him in the room, and I had to drag Sadie outside, my arm was bleeding and swelling, but I had to take Sadie away from the house, I walked bare footed to a nearby park with her and sat with her until everything calmed down, Charlie ended up being okay, there was no blood, just a lot of slobber, I was scared that he was badly hurt, I had no idea she was going to act like that, my arm was hurting pretty bad, it went numb for awhile and kept swelling until my boyfriend brought me some ice, and then it started going down.

It was a huge commotion that night, and I don't ever want that to happen again, but unfortunately it almost did, I had spent the night at my boyfriend's house with Sadie in the room with me and away from the other animals.

My boyfriend's mother drove me home in the morning, and at first sight when Sadie saw my husky Shaddie, she wanted to attack her, luckily I had Sadie on a leash this time, I had to yell for my dad to grab my husky and take her in the back, because my husky was curious and wanted to meet Sadie, she kept coming foward and closer to her, I kept saying "Get back!" and she kept coming, while Sadie was going crazy on the leash trying to go after her, I immediately took Sadie into the house, and now have to keep her confined to my room all day because she absolutley cannot be around my other pets, she has tried attacking my husky and my rescued chihuahua, and my cat.

The person said she was good with cats, my dogs are non-aggressive, and that's what she said Sadie got along with.

I don't want to return her, as even though she is this way I really like her as she is good with people, she loves everyone she meets, but its just other animals that she has a huge problem with. None of my other dogs are this way.

I'm wondering if behavioral training would help her at all?
I want to be able to let her run around our yard, and get along with my other dogs, when I told the person that Sadie would have a playmate she said "Oh Sadie will love it, she needs a good playing buddy"
but obviously not Sadie can't stand other dogs.

What can I do to help this dog? I don't want to give her up already I want to try and make it work.

And watching the dog whisperer doesn't help, I learn a lot but what he does doesn't seem to work for me, I probably actually NEED him there to help out with her, other than that.. even though I have his books... it doesn't help me.
Oh and Sadie is up to date on all of her shots and is spayed/fixed.

I am feel really guilty about getting a new dog. I mean REALLY guilty.

My boyfriend and I have a dog together. it's really his dog, but we are together everyday, and the dog goes everywhere, and so it's basically our dog. He's a chihuahua mix, and the sweetest guy. We rescued him from a woman's house who didnt care about him, and had 10 kids running around and scaring him constantly. I've worked on him a lot and he is more socialized now, but still had typical chihuahua traits.

The other part of the back story. I have worked at a vet since I was 15 now. My first summer there, a woman brought in Chinese Cresteds and I fell in love. I have wanted one ever since.

Well I just got one two days ago. He just turned a year old, he was supposed to be a show dog but it didnt work. he is a "hairy" hairless. He is super sweet, but he doesn't play. He only plays with my cat, or my boyfriend's dog. I know I can get him to play, but I am not sure how? if I try to play with him, he gets scared. And he doesnt understand what chew bones, balls, rope toys, sqeaky toys.. nothing are. he just gives me a funny face. so in the morning or when I get home from work, he is all hyper and happy, and I dont know what to do! All I can do it pet him. It's wierd. He also doesn't make any noise at all.

So anyways, I brought him home two days ago. The second my boyfriend got here with his dog, I wanted to cry. I feel like I am replacing my boyfriend's dog. I feel horrible. I have been crying all these days. I have a week where I can take him back and have my money back. But the thought of taking him back makes me want to cry too. I realize it's only been a few days, but the guilt isnt getting any better. I just feel so torn. My boyfriend's dog doesnt seem that mad so far, but I love how needy he is of me.
I am starting to think maybe I got a mistake getting my own dog at all. I am also starting to think, as much as I love Chinese Cresteds, maybe I should have just found a Chihuahua, because I love all the expressions, the vocals, the needy part of the behavior. =/

I just don't know what to do. I dont want to keep a dog that I will feel I always treat second best when my other dog is around.
This happened before when my parents divorced, we had a dog at my mom's, and the dog from my childhood lived with my dad. Whenever that dog came to stay with us for a weekend if my dad had to go somewhere, I almost ignored my other dog.

I just don't know what to do!
I forgot to add, the Crested is the sweetest dog. He is playful with other dogs and himself some. And he is super sweet. He's a great dog, I do like him.
I paritally feel like I am so guilty I am putting up a wall between me and him.

I am probably going to get a puppy from a local shelter. My mom's requirement is mostly it needs to be under 10 pounds and absolutely needs to be adopted. I am trying to figure out a good small dog breed. I do have a cat but she's completely unaffected by anything so that shouldn't be a problem, I was leaning towards a yorkie but they are so few and far between and expensive to adopt (mostly I have found yorkies for 0-0 dollars). I am not completely sure of all of the small dog breeds. I can just find chihuahuas mostly.

So:

1. Small dog breeds?
2. Breed recommendations?
3. Am I being unrealistic thinking five hundred is too much?
4. Any small dog rescues? (I live in missouri FYI)

Thanks!
